What to Expect When You Get A New Pair of Glasses

If you are getting your first pair of glasses or simply a stronger prescription, you should expect an adjustment period before you feel comfortable using your new lenses. Because it could be a little uncomfortable, you may be tempted to avoid using your glasses, but don’t! It just takes some time and knowing what to expect. Here are some basics to manage both the visual change and your expectations:

  1. Wear your glasses: As soon as you put on your glasses, you will notice changes. Of course, some of those won’t seem so wonderful as your eyes have to adjust to the changes offered by the lenses. You may get a few headaches and your spatial awareness may be a little off. If you are tempted to remove your glasses, don’t! Your eyes just need to adjust, and that can only happen if you keep wearing your glasses.
  2. Keep your glasses clean: Do you know what is worse that adjusting to new glasses? Adjusting to new, and dirty, glasses! Smudged lenses can make the adjustment just that little bit harder. To avoid scratching the glass, use a soft microfiber cloth for cleaning and drying.
  3. Watch your stress level: Did you know that stress can affect your eyes’ ability to focus? And if you are stressed, then your eyes will have greater difficulty adjusting to wearing your glasses. During the day, make sure you get up and walk around, give your eyes a break from strain, and keep them well-moistened to give them the best chance for adjusting easily.
  4. Be patient: Your eyes are used to your current state of vision. Adding a prescription will change that. Allow yourself up to two weeks before your eyes adjust fully to the change.
The thought of seeing your world clearly is great, but the short time period when you need to adjust to your lenses may not. By taking a few simple measures, you can make sure this transition time goes both smoothly and easily.
